Ask the Experts | Ask the Door Guys | Heavy Duty Hinges Used On Door Prepped for Standard Duty Hinges?

Question:

Can I use heavy duty hinges on a door that was prepped for standard duty hinges?

Answer:

In most situations, yes you can. Most manufacturers now provide their frames and doors with convertible hinge reinforcements. Some frames and doors require the removal of a piece of steel, either a plate or wire. The frames and doors from Ceco Door Products have 4 bumps on the hinge reinforcement called PIPS. Removal of all 4 PIPS on all hinge reinforcements will convert from standard duty to heavy duty hinges. Also, the PIPS can be removed in different configurations to manipulate the way the door sits in the frame.
