How to Determine Handing on a Single Commercial Door | Ask the Door Guy | Ask the Experts

Question:

How do you determine handing on a single commercial door?

Answer:

To determine the handing of a door, we first need to determine which side of the door is the secure side. The secure side of the door is located where a key, or some type of credential, is used to enter a room. After we determined the secure side of the door, you will want to put your back against the hinges in the frame and face the strike within the frame. When positioned in the frame, if the door swings out to the left, or away from the interior of the room, that door is a right-hand reverse swing or RHRB. If the door swings to your right, away from the interior of the room, that would be a left-hand reverse or LHRB. In the same position in the frame, if the door swings into the room and out to your right, that would be a right-hand swing or RH. If the door swings to the left into the interior of the room that would be a left-hand swing or LH. Determining the handing of a door can be confusing, but as long as you determine the secure side of a door, and you’re in the correct position you’ll be able to hand that door.
