A customer came into our shop with an issue related to security. He lives in an apartment complex, and just found out his key open his friend’s apartment as well as his. The apartment manager could not answer the question, so he is relying on use to help. How is this possible?
In many cases apartments are keyed by many different people. Master keying is very common, so the manager has access as well as the tenant if their key is lost or locked in the apartment. In this case because different people have done the keying and it appears no record keeping a cross keying situation has occurred allowing your key to open another apartment.
Keying records need to be kept on file with the apartment manager so that cross keying does not occur. This allows any locksmith to review the records before they start to rekey an apartment.
