Question
:

Are smoke doors also fire rated?

Answer:

Answer is Yes and No. A 20 min. or higher rated door or pair of doors can also be smoke rated. Door Hardware must allow for a positive latch, self-closing, proper seals must be used, and any glazing must be rated and is limited in size.

A “non fire rated” smoke door or pair of doors on the other hand is not required (in most instances) to be positive latching, self-closing, and glazing area is not restricted, nor is rated glazing required. However properly rated seals are required to limit transference of smoke through the opening. IBC does require positive latching for cross corridor smoke rated doors in a hospital.
