Question
:

I recently received a call from a client in a medical facility asking if automatic door operators could be installed on a pair of Existing Fire Rated Doors. Can they?

Answer:
Yes, they can, with the following requirements:
1) Field modification must fall within that which is allowable, or a field inspection and re-labeling may be required.
2) The Operator needs to be properly labeled for use in a rated door and frame assembly.
3) Automatic Operation of the door needs to be deactivated in a fire alarm event. Doors will then act as a normal self closing assembly.
4) As with any Auto Operator retrofit, the Mechanical Latching assembly will need to be electrified to allow latch to be released or retracted with the activation of the Auto Operator. The release / retraction of the latch will also need to be deactivated in a fire alarm event.
