Ask the Experts | Ask the Door Guys | Steel Doors and Frames and Hinge and Lock Location

Question:

I need to order a steel door and frame. They all have the same hinge and lock locations when I order them, right?

Answer:

Actually, no they don’t. All Hollow Metal manufacturers have different lock and hinge locations. Many factors go in to the decision on how to prep the door, though ANSI 161 Prep is most popular. It’s best to get the proper fit, height, hole cut-out, hinge location, etc. when ordering. For example, it is necessary to specify whether the hinges are butt-hinges, full surface, half surface, 83″ or 95″ in length, among other things. And, there are many more questions/options related to the locks.
